So now you know a bit more about us, what are we looking for from you?

What does it take to be a successful lawyer, and better still a great shaper?

First of all we want people who are passionate about the law. A person who is driven and motivated. Who is grounded, practical and well-organised. Astute, tenacious and inquisitive.

Someone who questions and challenges, who leaves no stone unturned. But while you’ll be driven by a hunger to succeed, you’ll also need to be driven by values. We strive to live by ours every minute of the working day. They are that important to us. So alongside intellect and ambition, we look for integrity, honesty, collegiality and selflessness.

It’s not an accident that on the list of core competencies we look for in a trainee “generosity of spirit” comes before “motivation” and “drive”. So if you’ll do anything to get what you want, you’ll probably be very successful, just not here.

Don’t think interviews give you enough time to shine?

We agree. That’s why we’ve scrapped them. Instead we now recruit all our trainees through our vacation scheme: a two-week “interview” in which you actually get to do the job, and we get to know you. You’ll sit in two different practice areas, and team up with partners and current trainees alike. But best of all you’ll be given your first chance to shape something: your future.

Our applications open on 1 October 2016 for all our schemes (Spring and Summer). They close on 15 January 2017.

The Vacation Scheme 2016/17:

    Spring: 3 – 13 April 2017

    Summer 1: 3 – 14 July 2017

    Summer 2: 17 – 28 July 2017

  • We now recruit all our trainees through our vacation scheme, this allows you to actually do the job and allows us to get to know you. You’ll sit in two different practice areas and team up with partners and current trainees alike. But best of all you’ll be given your first chance to shape something: your future.

What is the structure of the vacation scheme?

Our Spring and Summer schemes run for two weeks, you will spend each week in a different department, allowing you to compare two areas of legal work. In previous schemes our students have been given drafting to complete, attend client meetings, been present at court, completed research and assisted our Partners and fee-earners with a whole host of other tasks. We aim to give our vacation scheme students a taste of what trainee life at Mishcon is life.

On your first day you will attend a half day induction to give you further information about the rest of your programmes and receive training on our IT systems. You will get to meet our current trainees on your first day too. During your second week you will also attend a training contract assessment day.

We hold social events on a couple of the evenings to allow you to get to know each other out of the office. Those attending the Summer schemes are also invited to the Mishcon firmwide Summer party.

  • We are structured into six different departments: Corporate; Employment; Family; Litigation; Private and Real Estate. Our trainees have the opportunity to gain experience, skills and knowledge from across the Firm in four, six-month seats.

If you are successful in gaining a training contract, you will be involved in a variety of cases with a high degree of responsibility. You will also be an integral part of the team and as you progress through your seats, you will increasingly be expected to play an active role in the management of matters.

During each seat rotation, trainees sit with a Solicitor or Partner who acts as their supervisor allocating work to them and ensuring that they are also getting regular opportunities to work with a variety of fee-earners. They also play an active role in advising and developing their trainee throughout their training contract.

  •

At Mishcon de Reya, we are committed to the continuous learning and development of our people. We are a meritocracy, and from Trainee through to Partner, we offer a comprehensive learning and development programme to support our lawyers in acquiring the skills, knowledge and confidence to fulfil their career aspirations.

If you are an ambitious, hardworking and highly motivated individual, with the desire to succeed we would like to hear from you.

    Online application

Your application form is your ‘first impression’ so it’s very important. We receive a high volume of applications so it’s important that you spend time on it and allow yourself to stand out.

    Video Interview

Video interviewing allows you to complete your first round interview at a time and location convenient to you, rather than having the complication of booking a slot. If you have a condition or disability which prevents you from completing this stage please email trainee.recruitment@mishcon.com and we will provide another option that works for you.

    Assessment day

Our assessment day takes place in our London office. You will complete a case study exercise as well as an interview. We reimburse travel expenses if you are invited to the day. If you have any conditions or disabilities which we may need to accommodate for please make contact with us before hand so that we can provide suitable adjustments.

    Vacation Scheme

All of our schemes run for two weeks, you will spend each week in a different department. This allows you to compare two areas of legal work. Following the vacation scheme we look at the feedback from each of your departments as well as feedback from the assessment day you attend whilst on the scheme. Those that we recognise as having potential for future success at Mishcon are invited to a training contract interview following the vacation scheme.
